“Tender braised beef in a rich gravy with onion, cabbage and carrots, served with a fluffy mash made from British potatoes.”
“Marinated diced beef in a vegetable gravy with fresh mashed potatoes.”
This ready meal actually tastes pretty “real,” I think due to the cabbage. The slight bitterness it lends is not a common flavor in the scientifically-designed, industrially-produced ready meals of America I’m familiar with. I’m still impressed by the relatively short lists of ingredients and lack of E-numbers in the British and Irish meals. The beef is soft and has a slight processed texture that is probably from the acidic tomato marinade. The gravy is thin and has a light vegetal flavor from carrots, onion and the aforementioned cabbage. The mash is the weakest part of the meal. The texture is not what I’d call “fluffy.” The mash isn’t bad, just very stiff. I’ve no idea why it’s important to point out that it’s made from British potatoes. What about British carrot farmers? I’m sure they’d like a shout-out, too. Or are the potatoes and the beef (the ingredient listing says it’s British) the only things British in this meal? Anyway, it’s actually pretty good and fairly nutritious, too.
